What does "GMO Soy" mean?

I grew up on a farm, and my dad raised soybeans.  And, yes, I used to drive the John Deere tractor and help plow the fields! (Know that some of you can't imagine me on a tractor....)

Little did I know that I would grow up and use a non-GMO soy protein shake as my daily breakfast!   Throw in a few strawberries or blueberries and crushed ice.....yum, yum.

We hear a lot of buzz about "GMO" and "non-GMO".  But, what do these terms actually mean?

"GMO" stands for "genetically modified organisms."  GMO ingredients come from crops whose genes (DNA) have been scientifically altered through a laboratory procedure called genetic modification or bioengineering.  Non-GMO ingredients come from crops grown from seeds that have not been genetically modified.

However, soy that comes from seeds that have not been genetically modified is not a guarantee that the end soy product is free from GMOs. You need to also look for the Preserved Program (IPP)-certified non-GMO soy label.

What is the Identity Preservation Program?  IPP is a third-party program that carefully monitors soybean production from seed  supply, planting, harvesting, transportation, storage, testing, distribution, processing, documentation, and manufacturing to ensure non-GMO soy.

In short, look for non-GMO soy with the IPP standard of approval.

Our cells are fearfully and wonderfully made.  They know when "nature" has been tampered with.
